Pledge for the Implementation of Indus Water Treat: Reaffirmed
Islamabad: On Thursday, a reiteration of the committee regarding the Indus water treaty was made by Pakistan and India. Both countries with enthusiasm, are looking forward to the Permanent Indus Commission meeting to be held in India.
In the 117th meeting of the Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) discussed the water-related issues among both countries.
According to the statement issued by the Commission, "Pakistan reiterated its observations on the KIRU Hydroelectric Project (HEP) located upstream river Chenab and India's new run-of-the-river small HEPs on Western rivers,".
According to the Treaty and the practices in vogue from 1989 until 2018, India was persuaded to communicate with Pakistan in case of advance flood-flow and Pakistan's allegations towards Indian projects such as Pakal Dul and Lower Kalnai.
The format of the meeting is that it is held in both countries alternatively and manually, under relevant provisions of the Indus Water treaty (IWT), 1960. The leader of the Indian delegation was Pradeep Kumar Saxena and of Pakistan was Syed Mohammad Meher Ali Shah.
Pakistan conveyed its concern regarding the 100MW Pakal Dal Hydropower project and was going to act beseech Article 9 of the treaty that reloves the differences with international arbitration.
On the other side, India presented the view that it was rather too early to solicit Article 9 because the plans were not discussed with the commissioner and not been at a level to be published. India tried very much to address Pakistan's concerns.
The hosts have desired to visit the site in the early part of May and hold another annual meeting to be
documented in the annual report of PCIW.
